The UK Modern Slavery Act – Second Year of Reporting by Universities

26 June 2018      Emma Keenan, Procurement Specialist

With thanks to Dr Olga Martin-Ortega and Patrycja Krupinska, I am pleased to be able to share with you this years’ report analysing the latest Slavery and Human Trafficking statements published by UK universities. The research for the report undertook a qualitative analysis of statements released by 98 universities (including two university hospitals) which are obliged to produce a statement under section 54. These include 69 statements produced by universities reporting for the second time and 29 by universities reporting for the first time.

The report makes for very interesting reading, highlighting good examples and recognising where some work is still required, but also telling the story of a sector that is getting better at identifying risks in its supply chains.

Dr Martin-Ortega will be presenting at the HEPA conference this year and will be addressing some of the areas where improvement is required, giving practical advice on how to develop your statements and the work behind it.
