Brexit: Tariff Consultation & no import procedure easements

The Department for International Trade is undertaking a consultation on the UK Global Tariff which will enter into force on 1 January 2021. BUFDG's tax group will be discussing the tariff consultation at their meeting on 12 February and decided how to respond. And among some dramatic headlines about food shortages, you may have read in the news today that there will be no easements to import procedures after 31 December (as had previously been planned in the case of a no-deal Brexit scenario for last October, e.g. postponed accounting etc). The Cabinet Office press release states that 'all UK exports and imports will be treated equally. This will mean traders in the EU and GB will have to submit customs declarations and be liable to goods’ checks'. It also confirms that 'the policy easements put in place for a potential no deal exit will not be reintroduced as businesses have time to prepare'. You have been warned!
